Proxy service

RCUB enables its users to use a proxy service in order to more efficiently access web contents and download files from the Internet (FTP - file transfer protocol). Proxy server locally stores (caches) contents previously visited by other users. This allows much faster access to frequently requested content and files, which contributes to better customer service and more efficient use of the Internet.  The use a proxy server is obligatory for individual users in some institutions.
In order to enable the Internet access to their individual users, institutions linked with RCUB must have their own proxy server. Institutions’ proxy server institutions can operate in two modes:
- direct access to the Internet - this mode means that the Institutions’ proxy server accesses the Internet directly and is independent from other proxy servers;
- indirect access to the Internet - means that the Institutions’ proxy server accesses the Internet through RCUB proxy server (parent mode). This mode is recommended to institutions whose servers do not have enough disk space for effective local caching. Indirect RCUB using proxy servers increases the chances of requiring frequently used content (hit rate), which contributes to better customer service.

The use of proxy servers is a mandatory requirement for access to KoBSON service. The access to RCUB proxy servers is allowed only for AMRES users.

In case that the institution is unable to provide its own proxy server, its users can directly use RCUB proxy server, at proxy.rcub.bg.ac.rs, port 8080.
Individual users must use a proxy servers to access Web content and files with Internet, whether it is a proxy server of their home institution or RCUB's proxy server.

When using KoBSON service for access to journals, periodicals and other scientific literature, users must use a RCUB’s proxy service or other AMRES service centers, which are only that are registered for the access to KoBSON service.

RCUB’s Proxy Service is available at proxy.rcub.bg.ac.rs, port 8080. There are several different DNS names and IP address at this proxy server, in order to assure balanced loading and traffic. Having that in mind the use of names and not IP addresses is strongly recommended when configuring this service for individual users is in question.
Within this service RCUB conducts the following activities:

• maintenance of full functionality of proxy services;
• implementation of appropriate access regulations;
• monitoring of services;
• protection of servers against viruses and unauthorized users ;
• coordination with KoBSON service;
• archiving system logs;
• technical support and consulting.
